Measuring Brain Pressure of Climbers on Mt Everest

MicroMiniature DVRT
Dr. Henry W Querfurth of the Department of Neurology, Brown University has recently reported on venous ophthalmodynamometry (vODM), a non-invasive method that he and his co-authors pioneered to estimate intracranial pressure (ICP).  This method uses a custom MicroStrain spring-loaded DVRT displacement transducer to gently apply a graded pressure to the sclera of the eye while visualizing blood flow through the central retinal vein of the eye. To show the usefulness of vODM for ICP in the field, a clinical trial of climbers during their ascent up Mount Everest was conducted.  The authors reported increasing mean intracranial pressure with altitude.  To read the complete study, click here >>
