Application Note: High Speed Train Wireless Sensing Systems
Maintenance and service is a key contributor to the total cost of high speed train ownership. While high speed rail often costs over $10,000,000 per mile to construct, the ongoing maintenance and operation cost can approach $200,000 per mile of track annually. (New York Times, 2009)

LORD MicroStrain® wireless sensing systems provide fleet operators with a quick and cost-effective path to embedding health sensing capabilities on both new and existing rolling stock for continuous, automated condition updates.

Tech Tips and Tricks: Using a Multimeter with the DEMOD-DC
Traci Barrows
Traci Barrows,    Inside Account Representative, Sensing Systems

This month Traci explains how to use a multimeter with LORD MicroStrain's miniature in-line DVRT® signal conditioner.

The LORD MicroStrain® DEMOD-DC® Miniature In-Line Signal Conditioner provides signal conditioning electronics for all LORD MicroStrain® DVRT® Differential Variable Reluctance Transducers. The user connects power, ground and analog out, and the DEMOD-DC® outputs a buffered, high-frequency response voltage proportional to the linear position of the DVRT®. Typically the user will acquire the analog signal with a DAQ for further processing, analog-to-digital conversion, etc. Data acquisition can be conducted in its simplest form by connecting a multimeter.

Tech Tips and Tricks: Powering Wireless Sensor Nodes with Sources Greater than 9 Volts
Andrew Deering, Senior Support Engineer
Andrew Deering,    Technical Support Engineer, Sensing Systems

This month Andrew explains how to externally power MicroStrainwireless sensor nodes with power sources greater than 9 volts.

Certain LORD MicroStrain® wireless sensor nodes may be powered externally. In many cases, longer life/higher capacity batteries are mounted adjacent to the node. In some applications, it may be advantageous to use other available power sources. For example, if one were to deploy wireless sensor nodes on a piece of heavy equipment, being able to use the existing 12 VDC vehicle electrical system would be valuable.
